Last night Annette came over & we had a nice talk. The topic is mark-making. As in I think it might be time to do it. In my paintings.
Some things Harry said made me realize that might be the very thing that I have felt is missing in my paintings.
I confess I am afraid of my own marks. Thus far the texture process has involved disallowing intentional handmade marks to remain. Any handwriting or marking has been washed over or textured over or buffed over. The thought was to be organic & biomorphic, but I am also realizing there has been an element of not being confident in my own marks.
Harry was saying mark making can be about edges. As in marks can be used to define edges. Since I am also working on my own personal boundaries and my art has been about boundaries and edges for years, hmm & duh! Maybe it is about Suzy finally making a mark in the middle. Suzy finally quits worrying about boundary violations, quits fearfully guarding her fences, and dances in the middle? says what she means to say without fear of disapproval?
And so a question I would like to hear answered by other artists: What is mark making? How, why what, etc?
Am studying Mark Perlman's marks. Sure would love to hear what he has to say about mark making.
